IMAT (International Medical Admissions Test) is the entry exam for English-taught medicine programs at Italian public universities. This guide explains how Pakistani students can prepare, apply, and secure a seat.

What Is IMAT?

The IMAT (International Medical Admissions Test) is the entry test for admission to English-taught medicine (MBBS) and surgery programs at Italian public universities. It is administered globally by Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing on behalf of the Italian Ministry of University and Research.

For Pakistani students, IMAT is an exceptional opportunity to study medicine at world-class European institutions for a fraction of the cost of private medical colleges in Pakistan.

Why Choose Italian Medical Universities?

  • PMC recognised degrees: Graduates can apply for PMC (Pakistan Medical Commission) licensing
  • Very low tuition: €0 – €4,000/year at public universities based on income
  • Taught in English: Full 6-year MD programme in English
  • EU-recognised qualification: Practice medicine anywhere in the European Union after graduation
  • Internationally respected hospitals: Clinical training in top Italian teaching hospitals

Italian Universities Offering English-Taught Medicine

  • University of Milan — Statale (UNIMI)
  • University of Rome La Sapienza
  • University of Bologna
  • University of Padua
  • University of Turin
  • University of Pavia
  • University of Messina
  • University of Bari
  • Campus Bio-Medico (Rome) — private, higher fees
  • Humanitas University (Milan) — private, higher fees

Total seats across all public universities: approximately 1,800–2,000 for international students annually.

IMAT 2026 Structure

The IMAT exam consists of 60 multiple-choice questions, 100 minutes total:

  • Section 1 — Critical Thinking & Problem Solving: 12 questions (40 min)
  • Section 2 — Biology: 18 questions
  • Section 3 — Chemistry: 12 questions
  • Section 4 — Physics & Mathematics: 18 questions

Scoring: +1.5 for correct answers, -0.4 for incorrect, 0 for blank.

Key Dates for IMAT 2026

  • February–March: Pre-enrollment via Italian Embassy in Pakistan opens
  • April–May: Registration on Universitaly portal opens
  • September (typically 2nd week): IMAT exam date (Pakistan test centres available)
  • Late September: Results and university ranking lists published
  • October: University enrollment begins for successful candidates

How to Prepare for IMAT

Biology

FSc Biology covers most of what you need, but depth and question style are different. Focus on:

  • Cell biology and molecular biology (very heavily tested)
  • Genetics and inheritance
  • Anatomy and physiology (human systems)
  • Ecology and classification

Chemistry

  • Organic chemistry is critical — FSc students often find this the hardest section
  • Chemical bonding, equilibrium, and kinetics are heavily tested
  • Focus on university-level general chemistry concepts beyond FSc scope

Critical Thinking

This is the section most Pakistani students underestimate. It tests logical reasoning, argument analysis, and inference — skills not typically taught in Pakistan's FSc curriculum. Dedicated practice with Cambridge Critical Thinking resources is essential.

  • IMAT past papers (2011–2025) — available on Cambridge Assessment website
  • AK Lectures (YouTube) — excellent for biology and chemistry
  • IMAT official practice materials
  • IGC IMAT preparation workshops

Score Needed to Get In

Cut-off scores vary by year and university. Historically:

  • Top universities (Milan, Rome Sapienza): 35–42/60
  • Mid-tier universities: 28–35/60
  • Less competitive slots: 20–28/60

Pakistani students who score 30+ consistently secure a place at an Italian medical university.
